BACKGROUND
Roots Reggae is all about calling out oppression and injustice perpetuated within the system. True to Rastafarianism, the music is centrally about 'burnin' down Babylon'. I wanted to point out in this song that our Reggae is true to these origins unlike a lot of modern reggae music. However, the nature of oppressive regimes, our circumstances and the world has changed since roots reggae came to fruition in the 70s. The song is recognising a new state of affairs, new challenges, new enemies and new confrontations of this age.
The song is expressing that this reggae music is here to comfort us even when things go against us and we are feeling down trodden or losing to powers that feel greater than us. It's saying hold on and be strong and keep close to you what you know to be true.
The hook also turns to a major lift in the second half following the pre- chorus. That part serves as a mantra for rejecting greed despite wanting success and good in life. It's saying we can reach a higher ground without accepting the values of this capitalist system that oppresses most of us in more ways than one.
Oooooo ooooh
No smile come without first a cry
There’s no such thing as a sweet good bye
The righteous lose to Evil, we fail often when we try
But the people of this music straight refuse to live the lie
So often dreams they go and they, Run away
Nasty bills come through the door and, eat ya pay
Often clouds they come
Prevent us feel them sunny rays so
When we fall get left behind, we sing for better days now
Stand up defy, we pump that soul rock reggae
Bump the ride, we live we strive
with soul rock reggae
Come together love the truth with Soul Rock Reggae
I hit your heart from I’m the booth with soul rock reggae
Pump the groove and ride the wave with soul rock reggae
Defeat the lies and live the truth with soul rock reggae
Breath the air the trees the leaves with soul rock reggae
Feel the beat from deep within with soul rock reggae
Cos I don’t wanna sell my soul
And I don’t need a brand new ride
I just wanna keep my wheels and
I gotta get by
I just wanna live this life
And I just wanna see them grow
I just wanna share this love and
I wanna let go
Let go, let goo
Let goo, let gooo
Modern life present many avenues
Right here, right now, we feel no choice do you
Only one action, one destiny one voice
For what has gone dry must now become moist
Disconnected worlds rejoined, and rejoiced
You used to wish you cared but now you got no choice
This wealth of things just figments and toys
Spiritual richness set woman and man from girl and boy.
Stand up defy, we pump that soul rock reggae
Bump the ride, we live we strive
with soul rock reggae
Come together love the truth with Soul Rock Reggae
I hit your heart from I’m the booth with soul rock reggae
Pump the groove and ride the wave with soul rock reggae
Defeat the lies and live the truth with soul rock reggae
Breath the air the trees the leaves with soul rock reggae
Feel the beat from deep within with soul rock reggae
Cos I don’t wanna sell my soul
And I don’t need a brand new ride
I just wanna keep my wheels and
I gotta get by
I just wanna live this life
And I just wanna see them grow
I just wanna share this love and
I wanna let go
Let go, let goo
Let goo,let gooo
And this system you know
It’s been getting me down, down down
Oh and this system you know, oh you know
They come quite you now, quiet you now
Well they can take me now
Woooaa wooaaaah
